About Us

Merit Health Wesley (MHW) is a 211 bed community based hospital located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The hospital provides comprehensive care to patients and families, while creating a safe work environment for practitioners, trainees, patients and staff, and is devoted to providing high quality medical education for residents. MHW has 37,500 emergency room visits per year and has 36 hours of board certified Emergency Medicine physician coverage for each 24 hour period, allowing for a diverse experience of specialties and patient populations. MHW is accredited by The Joint Commission on Hospital Accreditation. We have active accreditation as a Stroke Center, Chest Pain Center, and Heart Failure and Atrial Fibrillation Center. MHW has been designated a level 3 trauma facility by the State of Mississippi. With over 200 currently active medical staff members specialty rotations are available in cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, family medicine, general surgery, neurology, oncology, orthopedic surgery, pediatrics, vascular surgery, intensive care, and neonatology with neonatal intensive care. The educational philosophy of the program is designed on adult learning theory.

Recognized for patient safety and for top performance on key quality measures, the administration and staff fully support graduate medical education. The academic faculty, program director, and associate program director are contracted with Merit Health Wesley who provides funding for their protected time. MHW has a full time coordinator for the EM program with another coordinator for the IM program and a third GME coordinator.
